Holiday Peppermint Patties

Homemade Peppermint Patties only have 5 ingredients and are so easy to make! They are delicious and would make a great gift idea during the holiday season.

1 14 oz. can sweetened condensed milk

1 Tbsp. + 1 tsp. peppermint extract

5 cups powdered sugar + more if needed

1/4 tsp. salt

24 oz. semisweet or dark chocolate, finely chopped

1 cup crushed candy canes, optional

Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat together sweetened condensed milk and peppermint extract.

With the mixer on low speed, gradually add in the powdered sugar, allowing it to fully blend together before adding more. Beat in salt. If dough is sticky, add more powdered sugar, 1/4 cup at a time.

Using a medium cookie scoop, level out scoopfuls of filling, kneading and rolling each one in your hands a few times before rolling into a ball. Transfer to the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with all the filling. Using your fingertips, or the palm of your hand, press each round of filling down into a 1 1/2 inch circle.

Set aside and allow patties to dry for at least 1 hour on each side.

When it’s time to dip them in chocolate: Fill a medium pot 1/3 full of water and bring it to a low simmer over medium heat. Place a heatproof bowl on top of the pot snugly. Reduce heat to low and add 2/3 of the chocolate. Place a candy thermometer into chocolate and let it melt, stirring frequently. Do not let the temperature exceed 120 degrees.

Once the chocolate has fully melted, remove the bowl from the heat. Wipe the bowl to remove any condensation.

Stir in the remaining chocolate, a little bit at a time, allowing what is added to completely melt before adding more.

Set aside and allow the chocolate to cool to 88 degrees.

Using a fork or candy dipper, dip each patty in the chocolate, allowing excess chocolate to drip off. Place it back on the parchment paper lined baked sheet. Sprinkle the top of each dipped patty with crushed candy canes.

Set aside and allow the chocolate to set about 1 hour, before serving.

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
