German Sweet Chocolate Cake

German Sweet Chocolate Cake is always a big hit to serve!

4 oz. Baker’s German’s Sweet Chocolate

1/2 cup boiling water

1 cup butter

2 cups sugar

4 eggs, separated

1 tsp. vanilla

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour or cake flour

1 tsp. baking soda

1/2 tsp. salt

1 cup buttermilk

1 recipe for German Chocolate Frosting

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter and flour three 9 inch round cake pans. Line the bottom of pans with buttered parchment, wax paper or aluminum foil, shiny side up.

Melt chocolate in boiling water. Cool.

In a mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar until fluffy.

Add yolks, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Blend in vanilla and chocolate.

Mix the flour with the soda and salt, then add alternately with buttermilk to chocolate mixture, beating after each addition until smooth.

Fold in beaten egg whites. Pour into the prepared pans.

Bake 30-35 minutes. Cool in pans 5 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to cool.

Frost only the tops with  German Chocolate Cake Frosting.
